Behind the Process: Concept Designs

Concept designs are one of the first stages of a project and they establish the overall vision and direction. This can include aspects such as colour schemes, space planning and material samples.

“Concept designs are one of the most important things to show the client, as it is basically like a first impression. Clients can understand a concept by simply looking at cohesively curated images, and they love a catchy phrase to go with the idea.”- Helen Dang, Senior Designer

Concept designs may be created by the designer, but a good concept design should always feel like a collaboration with the client. Once the client lays out what their vision for the space is, designers will explore different ways to express this vision. Often, they may come up with two or three initial concepts, before further developing the idea that the client is most attracted to.

“Concept design is essentially creating a narrative that drives engagement and builds connections. My approach to drafting a concept is by looking at the brief from different angles. The surroundings, history, culture, influences, etc help me build my story. I then like to implement these details in different forms whether that be lighting, art, textures, smell, etc.,” - Christina Mathew, Junior Designer
